Titanic Rock – the Ship in the Mountains
The mighty Titanic Rock stands guard over the Naauwpoort Nek. This is the pass that leads into the village of Clarens.
In 1912 the town of Clarens was officially declared. This declaration was one of only two topics of conversation among residents, the other being the launching and subsequent sinking of the “unsinkable” Titanic. It didn’t take long for someone to notice the similarity between pictures of the ship and the huge rock formation at the entrance to the village.
In 1865 it looked down on a particularly bloody battle between the Boers and the Basotho (see Battle of Naauwpoort Nek).
There are hiking trails up to and around the prow of the mountain, maintained and kept up by the CVC. There are breathtaking panoramas over both sides, towards Bethlehem and over Clarens. The route takes about an hour and a half so make sure you have water. Most of all, take the time to really enjoy the view.
