Most B&B’s and self catering guesthouse accommodations in Clarens have mid week specials, and that is when the town is at its most relaxed. Parking is plentiful and the locals have finished working long enough to really stop and take a moment to find new friends and explore local adventures.

The town is full of RESTAURANTS who generally specialize in breakfast, traditional fresh and generous Free State hospitality.

Come and feel the town is yours, as it was 20 years ago.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most frequent questions and answers

Can I bring my pets?

Clarens is a dog friendly town (and horses and cats and many other creatures beside) but you should definitely check your host before hand, or contact editor@clarensnews.co.za for recommendations for pet friendly guesthouses.

What clothes should I pack?

Clarens has fairly extreme seasons. It is one the top snow destinations in winter, so be sure to bring wind breakers and woolies if you plan to visit between June and September.

Of course our summer days are gorgeous, and make sure to have a swimming costume to wear at the Conservancy Dam – a favourite among the locals.

Beyond that anything goes from ballgowns to off road boots!

What is there to do in Clarens?

Art galleries and trinket shops, precious stones and photography, fascinating people with hospitable Free State generosity, sun dappled courtyards with cheese tasting platters, a brewery and pub or two and so much more.

Clarens is also a fantastic Golf destination with a top quality 18 hole course stretching across, under the road and on to the Estate.

Outside of the town there is white water rafting, horse riding, quad bikes, hiking, 4×4 tracks, rodeo events and much more besides. For more info click on ACTIVITIES

What is there to do in the area around Clarens?

The village is situated in the Brandwater Basin, a large mountain ringed area which includes the areas of Fouriesburg and Ficksburg and slightly further out, Rosendal and Clocolan.

The rock faces, with their vivid colors give name to the Golden Gate National park which is incredible to see in the late afternoon, and they wrap river tunnels, holkrantze, and natural wonders aplenty, as well as wildlife, bushman art, history and worlds of adventures.
