Nestled in the rolling foothills of the Maluti Mountains of the north eastern Free State lies the Golden Gate Hotel in the Golden Gate Highlands National Park that celebrates it’s 50th birthday this year.
The park derives its name from the brilliant shades of gold cast by the sun on the park’s sandstone cliffs, especially the imposing Brandwag rock, keeping vigil over the main rest camp. The highest point in the park, reveals a breathtaking tapestry of red, yellow and purple hues as its warm shades merge with the cool mountain shadows towards evening.
The Golden Gate Hotel is perfectly situated on the 11 600 hectares of unique environment – a true highland habitat on the edge of the north eastern Free State in the Clarens and Harrismith area.
The Lounge is a perfect place to watch the lights come on on the Brandwag in the early evening – lovely place to stop after an afternoon exploration of the Park to enjoy a great meal in their restaurant, or a pleasant drink looking out over the park through the huge windows.
An absolute must for any visit of the park, and there is a lovely trail behind the hotel, enquire at reception for details
