After publishing a blog post about Clarens local Elvis Mokoena and his ambitions of being a pilot the other day, I had the pleasure of meeting with the well spoken man himself the other day at Highland Coffee.

The 26 year old local works at Clarens Xtreme, running their social media pages when he isn’t clocking up hours in flight or studying for the endless examinations involved in getting his Private Pilots Licence.

Over a cappuccino he explains why he believes that communication is the largest part of his empowerment skill set. He was lucky enough to go from Dihlabeng Christian School on an exchange program to England which proved to be a turning point in his life. As the Captain’s voice came over the intercom, he heard his own voice, and knew then that he would be flying the ship some day!

“Flying into Dubai at night was like landing in a city of gold, the lights lit up the desert unbelievably…”

He approached Ollie at CX and made a proposal – a loan in exchange for work which he has used so far to accrue 20 of the 45 hours required for the PPL, while engaging a full time study schedule.

He hopes to continue funding the long road to becoming a Commercial Pilot through work and crowdfunding. As he explains it, there is a need for a long term campaign to fund youth potential to the future. He has been lucky (and determined) enough to get a start, and believes that the best thing he can do is set up a structure to help future kids get the opportunity to realize their own dreams.

The good people at Protea Hotel have seen fit to offer the venue for the start of this project for a Quiz Night with prizes and vouchers from local businesses galore.

A ticket is R100pp, includes food and there will be drinks for sale, beer and wine. Tickets available at CX and Protea Hotel!

During our meeting he asked that specific thanks be given to
