24th April, 2015: Celebrating Freedom

Peerneef evening - Fouriesberg roadMG_0018

Celebrating Freedom

On Monday (27th April) South Africa celebrates Freedom Day.  Freedom Day (27 April) is a national public holiday in South Africa and serves to commemorate the country’s first democratic post-Apartheid elections, held in 1994.  It’s also a day where we can all take a little time out to reflect on the role which each and every South African needs to play to ensure that our country moves forward – and who could say it better than Nelson Mandela:

Our daily deeds as ordinary South Africans must produce an actual South African reality that will reinforce humanity’s belief in justice, strengthen its confidence in the nobility of the human soul, and sustain all our hopes for a glorious life for all.

Clarens News would like to take this opportunity to wish all our readers a wonderful weekend, and a meaningful Freedom Day on Monday.

Ashburton MTB Clarens

The Ashburton MTB race held in Clarens last weekend was a resounding success.   The event attracted 2200 entrants – many of whom had travelled from Europe – and comments ranged from “this is the best in the world” to “fabulous route, fantastic scenery…it simply couldn’t be better.”    Advendurance organizers put a large part of their success down to the wonderful co-operation they got from the farmers en-route, who went to great lengths to make sure that the event would be a success.   The Clarens Village Nature Reserve’s new trail (Caracul trail) which formed part of the route also got rave reviews.   This is an event which Clarens can certainly be proud of and speaking to Clarens restaurants and businesses, it quickly becomes obvious that this event helped to make for a bumper weekend in the town itself, so a big THANK YOU to Advendurance for bringing MTB to Clarens.
Local organizer Paul is very pleased with how well the event went off, and anticipates that interest in Clarens MTB will continue to grow and to go from strength to strength.   He did however add, that the size of MTB Clarens will always be limited by the amount of accommodation available in Clarens.
Have a look at the Ashburton MTB series website:  http://www.nationalmtbseries.com.  to see their video feature, highlighting this year’s race.

Classic Cars:  SARRA MacGregor Maluti Meander

Classic car enthusiasts are in for another treat this Sunday.   (And didn’t you just love the jaguars that visited us in March.)   This weekend SARRA are holding the MacGregor Maluti Meander and the 29 Classic cars participating in this event will arrive in Clarens on Sunday, where they will be joined by classic cars belonging to the Maluti Auto Club.
SARRA stands for the South African Regularity Rally Association.   Classic Regularity Rallying is modeled on the rallies of earlier times where a crew of driver and navigator needed to keep their rally car on the route and on time, catering for many scheduled speed and direction changes, the weather, traffic and road conditions. The famous LM rally was run on this principle until the 1970’s, as was the Monte Carlo rally. It is a sport of precision and accuracy, rather than an all out quest for speed like the modern special stage rallies.
To learn more about Regularity Rallying visit the SARRA website: http://www.sarra.co.za/

Plants found in the Clarens Village Nature Reserve

Clarens Village Nature Reserve

Greetings to all our Village plant enthusiasts.  After some time out due to the recent MTB Cycle Series race through Clarens this past weekend, the CVC can now breathe a sigh of relief…and continue producing interesting articles. This week we’re going off on a slightly fresher tangent – we’ll be focusing on an exotic member of the Asteraceae (Daizy) family.

Cirsium vulgare (Scotch Thistle in English, Skotsedissel in Afrikaans) is considered a naturalised exotic in S.A. This group are Alien & Invasive Plants (A&IP’s) that have occurred within our country for a long enough period of time, measured in decades, to be deemed “natural” (though not to say beneficial, and more likely detrimental to local ecosystems). C. vulgare occurs naturally in parts of Africa and Asia, New Zealand, Australia, USA, Canada, South America, Hawaii and the Pacific islands, but is classified as a Category 1 weed.  Read more

Foot Clinic in Clarens

The editorial staff had a special treat this week.   Sister Julie visited us on the Golf Estate and tended our feet.   Oh what bliss.   And to think we didn’t even have to go anywhere for this amazing treatment.   Sister Julie works at Hospice in Bethlehem, but is happy to call on you after hours and over weekends  to make your feet happy for you .

Street Numbers in Clarens

(Letter from the Clarens Chamber of Commerce)

The CRA has put communiques out regarding the implementation of street number changes, specifically the deadline.  This process was kicked off several years ago before the existence of the Chamber of Commerce.  The Chamber has received complaints from businesses regarding the changes, specifically the cost of change,  and has had meetings with the CRA to try and determine the reasoning and where in the process the change is. Besides wanting to conform to street numbering in the rest of SA, the CRA is concerned that erf numbers do not appear on GPS tracking data making it impossible for emergency services, deliveries and visitors to track places down.  Whilst this may have been the case many years ago when the process was kicked off, it is not the case today and every erf number in Clarens appears on GPS data maps; probably a result of Google charting the data 2 or so years ago.   As part of the process the CRA has  contacted Garmin to determine how long it would take for street numbers to be listed as opposed to erf numbers and the answer is quite simply that they don’t know.

To this end, the position of the Chamber is that none of the businesses (or the residents for that matter) are obligated to display the street number as opposed to the erf number until such time that the electronic and print versions of the relevant maps have been updated.

Welcome to Winter

Snow making at Afriski

No snow in Clarens yet :  just clear blue skies and very chilly nights.  But yes – winter is here and it’s time to go skiing.   Afriski (only 2 hours from Clarens) is open and the thanks to their ability to make snow, the slopes are already providing opportunities for some great fun in the snow.   Click here to find out more about making snow and to read the latest snow report, and directions (with map) to Afriski.

How to stay warm in Clarens

Staying warm in Clarens is easy.   Here are some tips:

Posthouse IMG_0005 Grouse IMG_0002

–  Wrap up warm – but wear layers of clothing so that you can always take something off when you get too hot.  (And yes – at some point of the day you will.)

– Find a sunny spot out of the wind.   It may be winter, but we still have clear blue skies, and there are lots of spots where you can thaw out in the sun.

– Eat out!  Most Clarens Restaurants are well equipped for winter weather – and what can be more romantic than a gorgeous dinner next to a blazing fire.

Clarens to Fouriesburg The Caledon Loop

Self-drive:  Clarens to Fouriesburg:  The Caledon Loop

If you’re driving the popular Clarens to Furiesburg route (one of the recommended self – drive/sightseeing routes on clarens news website) why not make a short detour and drive the Caledon Loop.

From Clarens, take the R711 to Fouriesburg.   About 18k from the Clarens Golf club look out for the turnoff left onto S1356/S505, then stay right on the S505, a gravel road which winds down to the Caledon river valley floor.    This road is in excellent condition and easy to drive in any vehicle.  Read more

There are 4 major viruses killing our horses in SA. : African Horse Sickness, West Nile, EEV and Middelburg Virus.   In an effort to stop our horses from dying  Fund raising rides  are being planned throughout the country to create awareness and to raise funds to vaccinate horses belonging to those communities who cannot afford to vaccinate their horses.  (The blanket vaccination of horses  is no longer done by the State.)   The rides are due to take  place in August, just before the major vaccination time which usually takes place in September.  The first ride is to take place on  16th August, 2014,  when riders will ride from Shumba Valley to a beautiful historic farm just outside Fouriesburg.   Click here to read more.

The Twitcher

woody_and_doris-1Contemplating winter in Clarens is a confusing business.  Gaze out of the windows and the blue skies stretch to infinity while the sun butters the rolling mountains with awesome hues of khaki and gold.  Gorgeous.  Until you step outside and freeze where you stand.  Such is the social meteorology of our mountain perch, but I wax a trifle too lyrical perhaps.  In short, it looks brilliant out but don’t plan on spending too much time galloping about in it.  That is, after all, why God’s great plan includes breweries, restaurants and guest houses with large, roaring fires.Which brings me, via a complex and tangential route, to painting by numbers.  You’ve seen them; of course you have.  The concept is simple: Some small Korean person makes a neat line drawing of, say, London Bridge or a bowl of Carnations, and carefully numbers each and every little piece of it, circumscribed by a clear and uncompromising line.  The number concerned matches, assuming you bought the right set, a collection of paints which – when carefully applied to the corresponding space on the paper or canvas – produce a pleasing (though sometimes puzzling) outcome.  As a new-borne artist, you will almost certainly leave the result in your will to some thoroughly undeserving member of your intimate family, and never do another one. Read more

Plants found in the Clarens Village Nature Reserve: Schizoglossum atropurpureum

Clarens Village Nature Reserve Schizoglossum atropurpureum

Damien Coulson

Greetings to all our Village plant enthusiasts. Welcome to this weeks’ “bi-Weekly Plant of Interest”. We’ll be looking at a less-oft observed specimen  of the Asclepiadaceae (Milkweed) family.

Schizoglossum atropurpureum subsp. atropurpureum (Red-Milkwort in English, Melkwortel in Afrikaans and sehoete-moru in Sesotho) –what a mouthful, is a moderately sized erect geophytic herb of 600 – 1300 mm. It occurs in grasslands where there is a low fire incidence, but more often closer to streams where scrub and boulders are found. This herbaceous plant has been recorded at altitudes of 2040 m A.S.L. from the E. Cape through to Mpum.

This specimen was photographed along the Mallen Walk, but be quick if you want to take a happy-snap of the little bugger – the flowers are only in bloom for around a month and a half – 2 months. The stems of the genus spring-up annually from a small carrot-like tuber, which if pierced may exude a milky latex.  Read more

 CVC Report-back May  2014

Damien Coulson’s Report-back for May 2014  makes interesting reading: not only do the rangers appear to be winning the war against Alien and Invasive plants, but they’re also doing what they can about problem cattle in the reserve.   They continue their excellent work on the trails, and are now also offering to help property owners with advice on how to deal with removal of alien plants.   Click here to read the full report. You can also lend your support and keep all their hard work going by becoming a member of the Clarens Village Conservancy.  Click here to find out more.

Spring Edition – 6 September, 2012

Weekend Weather Forecast

Notes from the Editor

WITH APOLOGIES FROM THE EDITORIAL STAFF – POWER OUTAGES and INTERNET CONNECTION PROBLEMS have combined to make this a rather late edition. Who would have thought that we were all sampling potjies at the potjie competition in bright sunshine last weekend.  It seems that almost everyone in Clarens was at the Cooking for Cluny event – either cooking or eating. Our thanks go to Debra at the Bibliophile for the use of her venue. The general concensus was that we should have this event at the Bibliophile every year, rather than on the square. We would also like to congratulate the chefs at Protea for coming up with the winning potjie. Officially spring starts on September 1, and we’ve all been enjoying a change in the weather, so I could hardly believe it when I looked across to the Maluti Mountains on Thursday morning to see that they are once again wearing their snow blankets. Apparently there is more snow on the way. (According to the Afriski report they are expecting 2-5 cms of snow in Lesotho over the next three days.) Afriski, incidentally is closed for this month (so if you had planned to going skiing this year – it’s too late now.)  Next month they open their summer season. Fortunately, here in Clarens, we can look forward to a brightening sky this weekend.

Live Music

No matter what the weather, there is always fun and good music to be had in Clarens.Following on the phenomenal success of last week’s Johnny Cash Pilgrimage at the Ariichoke, Bruce is welcoming Christian Van Zyl to play at The Artichoke this Saturday (8th September) from 12,30  to 4.30 pm. Be sure to book a table with Claudia on 083 2768096, And what would Clarens be without the late-night vibe at Friends. This friday Slipstream(Denzell, Obi, Rudo and Victor) will be playing from 8.30pm until late.  For those who haven’t seen them yet you can get an idea of what they’re like by watching them on You Tube.http://youtu.be/v6TG6kTmtmI. (Great video clip – but not nearly as good as seeing them live.)  AND on Saturday night you are invited to sing your heart out at the Friends Karaoke evening.  The fun is scheduled to start at 8.30pm. Next weekend its Calvin’s birthday bash and Friends is set to really rock. Bands includinig Slipstream, K2, Van Smith and Bendover will all be there. Read next week’s Clarens News for more information. I’m sure that everyone is looking forward to listening to the Durban City Orchestra (under the directorship of Edrich de Langeon 29th September. Joining them are the Campus Dance Studio and the Winsome Fuller Studio of Dance. There will be both  matinee (12h00) and an evening (19h00) performances to be held on the Clarens Golf Estate. Everyone is welcome to bring a picnic baset, chairs and blankets, and there will also be food and drink for sale and a separate area and entertainment  for kids Tickets: R100 adults/R90 for pensioners/R50 for children. Info and tickets are available from classicsinclarens@hallmarque.co.za. You can also contact Carol Cochrane  (Cell: 082 9666 303) timmerskraal@telkomsa.net. or go to http://www.facebook.com/pages/Classics-in-Clarens/481374718541002 and hit LIKE.

Ornithological Notes

APOLOGY The Twitcher has been asked to apologize unreservedly to the proprietors of the Mosaic Pizza Emporium.   The disclosure, in last week’s column (Clarens News,30 August) that Woody and Doris, the town’s celebrity Ground Woodpeckers, have been dining for free on Mosaic Pizzas, has led to long queues of itinerant Indian Mynas, house sparrows, Hadeda Ibis, and even a family of merecats, demanding a slice of the action.  Mosaic’s owner (name withheld for fear of intimidation) lamented that while he was prepared to provide basic Neapolitan pizzas, the merecats’ demand for extra salami and artichoke hearts was a bridge too far.  He said that the angry birds had taken up positions on his Jungle Gym and had threatened to take hostages, while the merecats had gone into hibernation under his bar counter with a bottle of Irish whiskey.   Woody and Doris, recognizing that discretion is the better part of valour, have now reverted to ordering take-aways, which are delivered to the north-east corner of the MTN red-light district, under cover of darkness.   It is hoped that things will return to normal, although the hatching of 300 woodpecker eggs in the spring may yet threaten civil order and peace in Clarens. The Twitcher PS Early birds and late night revellers will have been startled to see two large cows grazing on the recently reinvigorated spring lawns of the Clarens Square, on Monday morning.   The fact that they were neatly tethered suggested they were not Gauteng holiday makers but locals bent on getting their greens.   The owner was nowhere to be seen but, when I went to have another look an hour or two later,  they were gone, suggesting either that the previous evening’s magic mushrooms had induced a bovine hallucination, or that the Town Fathers had acted quickly and decisively to ensure that no Harley-Davidson or Ferrari would be spattered by second-hand grass.

Things to Do

BOOK LUNCH AT THE GREEN GOOSE Lunch at The Green Goose is a simply must do for Clarens residents, as well as visitors staying in the area. The 93km drive may seem far, but given the stunning scenery, the good road, and the wonderful lunch waiting at the end, every kilometer is well worth the drive. From Clarens, take the R711 to Fouriesburg, then the R26 towards Ficksburg, but turn right onto the R70 (15kms before you get to Ficksburg). You’ll see the sign to the Green Goose on your left, where you turn onto the farm road, drive past the dairy, the fields of contented cows and other farm animals,  and the cheese factory to a well sign-posted parking area.  (GPS Co-ordinates: S28° 42’42′ E 27°55′ 54′.)  The Green Goose is the home the famous Ficksburger cheese, that so many of the Clarens residents are addicted to, but this truly organic farm also produces many other fine cheeses. Lunch is served either under the trees overlooking the farm dam (see photo of the view)  or beside a blazing fire – depending on the weather.  (The group of Clarens residents who lunched there on Wednesday, started off outside, but then moved inside once the wind started blowing.) All the food – including the delicious home-baked bread – is lovingly prepared in Anneke’s farm kitchen, where, in true organic farming tradition, the ingredients are based on what’s available on the farm, and since this is a dairy farm, you can count on an excellent cheese platter. Special food, needs time to prepare, so you need to book before you go, and remember that this is not the usual run-of-the-mill restaurant, so you need to take your own wine. To book contact  Anneke: Cell: 082 925 2770. Tel/Fax: 051 933 5754 Email: anneke@greengoose.co.za Visit the website: www.greengoose.co.za

September 11 Ground Zero Clarens

Ground Zero Free State 11 September 2012

Weekend Weather Forecast

Fantastic, a final opportunity to snuggle up in front of the fire with someone special, before summer bakes us dark with outdoor delights…

Notes from the Editor

The Gauteng Carnival well behind us we can finally settle down to really enjoying the best town in the country (well, my favourite anyway, and you don’t need to stuff my ballot with anything more than maybe the occasional pint of golden). With a huge series of events coming our way, this may be the last chance for Clarenites to enjoy their peace and quiet before January next year. You better run run run as fast as you can to catch a free gingerbread man at the new Bon Appetit premises next to the Clarens Meander by Protea Hotel, where Valerie is giving away one to every customer who comes in to try one of her range of 30 fabulous teas. I will be there bright and early for a cup of Lapsang Souchong, which is otherwise unavailable in this country. Come and try some smokey delicious and find out what tea is all about. Kelvin is sharing his birthday with several hundred of his closest Friends again this year, with all sorts of drinks specials and a host of live music. Check out the LIVE MUSIC listings for more info about who to expect to hear while you toast his good health. Many Happy Returns Kel, see you Saturday night. Meanwhile if this is all too much for you, try a quiet weekend in with Dan at Maluti Mountain Lodge, where he is going to try very hard to keep things calm and dignified with a range of drinks specials all mentioned in the WEEKEND SPECIALS below. Word to the wise, beware of the green fizzy stuph, it tends to burst its bubbles in your head the next day… The Clarens News, always with an ear to the ground (sometimes as a result of a long evening in the Grouse & Claret), can reveal that Clarens whisky drinkers may be in for a treat of cosmic proportions.   Your correspondent, quoting unnamed but usually unreliable sources, can confirm that plans are afoot to establish the village’s first distillery, resplendent with the warm glow of copper stills and metres of delicately corkscrewing pipes.   These wondrous contraptions of traditional design and superior craftsmanship will digest and burp large quantities of barley mash, on the way to producing Clarens’  first complex single malt.   Even better news is that the global consortium rumoured to be behind the move to make Glen Clarens have decided to offer a discrete service to village imbibers, who might be otherwise reluctant to be seen lurching into the Old Stone Refreshment facility.   For a small fee, whisky drinkers can have a 10mm copper (Grade 0) pipe run underground to their homes (within a 2km radius of the square), which will discharge up to 20 tots an hour, at a metred rate.   This may be a blessing for members of The Clarens Temperance Society, who meet monthly on the deck of the Mosaic Pizzeria to gargle rare single malts and wear funny hats.   The proprietor of  Mosaic, who prefers to remain anonymous for fear of reprisal, is apparently thinking of piping Glen Clarens into a ceramic drinking fountain to meet what is rapidly turning into an unquenchable demand.    Watch this space for details of where to book your pipeline to euphoria……..coming soon!

Live Music and Weekend Specials

No matter what the weather, there is always fun and good music to be had in Clarens.FRIENDS would like to mention this special message from a very special birthday boy: “K boys and girls it’s my B-DAY this weekend the 14th-15th SEP Friday night K2 VAN SMITH SLIPSTREAM BENDOVER loads of specials double brandy come R20 promo girls Sab specials so come have a jawl” (don’t complain about the spelling, go along and soon you won’t be able to either…) Or if you just want to listen to some good rock and have couple of beers, go visit Dan at Maluti Mountain lodge Castle Draught  500ml R12.00 Castle 330 ml Bottle R8.00 Single  Brandy and Coke R10.00 double Brandy and Coke R15.00 Ooooh it’s going to be rough

Ornithological Notes

Things have gone quiet since Woody and Doris elected to take a spring break, and hired a sit-in maid (Grizelda the one-winged Guinea Fowl) to take care of their clutch of 300 woodpecker eggs buried deep beneath the Leaning Tower of MTN.   Your correspondent was however struck this week by the sudden appearance of a fairly innocuous African Pied Crow (Corvus albus, to fellow twitchers) with the most astounding call ever recorded in these fair mountains.   This little fellow has been seen and heard the length of the village mouthing (beaking?) the Moonlight Sonata, as well as a number of rather irritating ABBA songs.   Bird experts from all over South Africa have been descending on our fair village to record this extraordinary cacophony of birdsong and can be seen at all hours lurking with their binoculars and recording equipment in the village’s rapidly greening shrubbery.   Indeed, international interest has been sparked, not least because the little fellow’s choice of ABBA songs defy common decency and taste.   However, all good things come to an end, as your correspondent discovered when he bumped into the larger than life proprietor of the Phatt Chef Restaurant.   Apparently his new smart-phone, endowed for some inexplicable reason with his personal choice of ring tones, was snatched from atop his freshly-barbequed steak last Sunday afternoon (when his attention was disengaged) by – yes – a Pied Crow.   Attempts to bring the bird down with an empty wine bottle only resulted in the poor creature gulping in fright and swallowing the phone.   Anyone calling Simon should be warned that he will be stuck on voice mail for a while and that the signal may fade as the new owner ascends through 5000 metres to escape other birds equally irked by ABBA songs.   It can only be hoped that the battery dies before the Crow enters Gauteng airspace and triggers SA’s air response system.

Coming up soon

MG’S CONVERGE ON CLARENS FOR THE CASTROL EDGE MG INDABA 2012 – 21-24 SEPTEMBER 12

world.
MG stands for Morris Garages and the cars were built in the little town of Abingdon near Oxford.

MG J2 to the very latest MG6 now available for sale around South Africa.

members and guests at the Castrol Edge MG Indaba 2012.
There will be a car display on the Square on Saturday morning, 22 September from 09h00 with a
Concourse d’Elegance and Concourse Comique at 11h15.

Or if you prefer your cars a bit quieter:The Sasol Solar Challenge will see the best of local and international solar powered vehicals racing around the country, with one of the legs coming from Harrismith to Bethlehem, lets hope the road works are done by then. And then the following weekend you better book your tickets right now for the symphonic feast to comeAnd the weekend after that the Bethlehem Veteran Car Club is having a Fees, with oh so many attractionsAnd a hint of what is to come for the Centenary, amongst other attractions, be sure to check outPeter Badcock-Walters Artist, Author and Illustrator at the Sheepshed Gallery Peter was conceived in Zambia, born in South Africa and educated in Rhodesia.  He is the author and illustrator of six best-selling books and now lives in the Eastern Free State village of Clarens, where he works from the Sheepshed Gallery, on the Clarens Golf Estate. As one of the last war artists of the twenty-first century, he was author and illustrator of three books on war in southern Africa, 1965 to 1981.   Two of these, Shadows of War (1978) andFaces of War (1980) captured the anguish of the bush war in Rhodesian (Zimbabwe), while the third, Images of War (1981) recorded the conflict in South West Africa (Namibia).    Peter’s astoundingly detailed monochrome drawings are complemented by evocative poetry, in the great tradition of Sassoon, Brooke and Owen.  These bestsellers and limited, leather-bound editions, now out of print, are regularly traded on Amazon and other international web and auction sites, together with his original drawings and prints. In 1985, Peter designed and illustrated The Illustrated Bosman, a celebration of South Africa’s most famous short-story writer’s wit and irony.  Selling over 25,000 copies in five editions, the book included 85 highly stylised illustrations reflecting a turbulent century of adventure, seen through the eyes of Oom Schalk Lourens, Herman Charles Bosman’s wry narrator and reputedly the greatest liar in the bushveld.  Trying to balance life in the slow-lane with a return to full-time writing and art in Clarens, Peter is currently working on a themed sequel to The Illustrated Bosman, entitled Marico Moments. In startling contrast, Peter also wrote and illustrated an off-the-wall children’s series, Fresh Out of Africa, set in The Land of Euphorbia.  Best sellers in both English and Afrikaans,Hironymus, the hippopotamus who couldn’t swim (1988) and Englebert, the elephant who wouldn’t stay grey (1988) blend quirky humour with multi-media illustrations of quite unique vibrancy.Original illustrations and limited edition prints from these books and collections will be exhibited for the first time at the Sheepshed Gallery in 2012.  The gallery also features a large collection of Peter’s oil on canvas wildlife and landscape painting, confirming his passion for Africa’s big sky country and the creatures who roam it. Peter lives in Clarens with partner, horticulturalist and author, Toni, and is returning to art, writing and publishing after a career in international consultancy.  Peter and Toni live and work in a century-old renovated sheep shed (The Clarens Country House), which – not surprisingly – houses the Sheepshed Gallery.   Go to lizardsleappress.com to see publications and pictures, and clarenscountryhouse.com to see the Sheepshed Gallery and guesthouse.
