19th December, 2014: Merry Christmas

Christmas treetiff

Editors note

With Christmas now only days away, we would like to wish all our readers everything of the best for the festive season.   We too are taking a break, so there will be no newsletter next week.   We will however keep you informed of events you should know about via our facebook page.

The week that was

Lots of excitement in Clarens since our last newsletter.   The NG Kerk market was fun – and despite the fact that we had fewer feet than in previous years, the CVC still managed to sell nearly R1000 worth of Christmas Trees.   Scotch also opened their doors (see article below) and Mathias Chirombo was in town with the opening of his exhibition: Sacred Spaces at the Ism-Skism Gallery.   And we couldn’t help but notice a few smiles with the crowning of Miss South Africa, Rolene Strauss, as Miss World 2014.

Wicket re-opens

Thank you Mr Tim
Last Tuesday 9th December, A Devastating Accident occurred when a Taxi Drove Straight into Wicket Candle Shop. Luckily no one was harmed as the Employee Amanda, had left just 5 minutes earlier.  With the long weekend approaching Wicket Candle Shop due to the Damage would not have been able to open. But Thanks to Tim Moorcroft and his Stumble blocks a wall was put up in just under an hour.
Ricky (The Shop Owner) is Grateful for all the support from friends.  Thanks to Tim was able to open for that long weekend and is still open and back in business.

Scotch Whisky  Lounge opens its doors

Scotch

Spending time in the  Scotch Whisky Lounge is fascinating.
So many bottles, so many shapes, so many subtle hues of colour, so many different origins, so many different types, interesting labels, interesting stories….and that’s all before you’ve even had a taste!   Spending time with Colleen McLaughlin in the Whiskey Lounge is a real treat – even for a non whiskey drinker like myself.  (Or perhaps I should amend that last statement –  having now had the opportunity to learn a little bit about whisky, and got the amazing variety of perfumes that escape as you open the top – I know that somewhere in Colleen’s amazing whisky collection, there is a whisky that would suit my particular taste buds perfectly.
The range of whisky on sale is based on Colleen’s personal whisky collection and is made up of mainly single malt Scotch whisky, along with Irish whiskey, and American Bourbon, but also includes Japanese and Taiwanese whisky.   (Incidentally the Japanese recently won an international award for the best single malt whisky in the world.)   Also in the collection is Bains Cape Mountain whisky – a South African whisky voted the world’s best grain whisky in 2013. Our rangers on Patrol

ICVC waterfall picts summer! That means good food, good company and, when in Clarens – stunning scenery. A walk along our trails will yield a veritable eye-feast of waterfalls, copious water containing streams, lush greenery, birds of every feather and impressive landscapes. Come and enjoy a hike or picnic in the reserve – guaranteed it will be well worth-it.

The above is an extract from the November 2014, CVC Report.   As informative as alwlays.  Click here to read the full report.

Plants found in the Clarens Village Nature Reserve

Clarens Village Nature Reserve

Greetings to all our Village plant enthusiasts.  This week we’re focusing on a member of theAmaryllidaceae (Amaryllis) family.

Boophone disticha (Bushmans Poison in English, Boesmansgif or Gifbol in Afrikaans & Leshoma in Sesotho) is a perennial geophyte which may grow to 600mm tall. This extremely toxic bulb grows in grassland and rocky areas, usually on hill slopes. B. disticha occurs from sea-level right through to 3000 m A.S.L, distributed throughout S.A. Boophone distich is both drought tolerant and frost resistant. This particular specimen was observed on the Kloof Mountain Trail; however additional sightings above Scilla Walk, Porcupine and the Sky Contour trails have been recorded. Please note (again) that this plant is both highly toxic to people and livestock.   Read more

Christmas 2

20 December 2014 Paphama Youth Development Christmas Party:  Tshepong Centre

It feels unbelievable that it is almost Christmas time again! As we get into the spirit of giving and sharing with our loved ones, we must reflect on how privileged we are to be surrounded by our precious family and friends, that we need to remind ourselves that there are little children who are affected by HIV do not have a Mom & a Dad to love & feel loved and this time of the year is a sad and desolate time for them. We cannot fill this void but we can ease their sadness by showering them with gifts and a fun filled day.    Contact Ntsebe Mofokeng @ 078 245 1709 during office hours.

Community News

Letter from the Clarens Ratepayers Association:Hi there,
With regard to Street Numbering, just a reminder that you should be making efforts to display your new street number on your property. Street numbering (as it is officially termed) has been on the cards since 2008 and has now been finalized and now brings Clarens into line with other towns across South Africa. Remember that your stand number is not changing, that will remain the same on Title Deeds and business documents, however, you will be required to advise your bankers and interested parties of your new street number. You will be required to produce proof of address in which case use your Municipal Account. Mail for Clarens is typically addressed to
Box Numbers, as we no longer have postal deliveries to properties, but of course the main reason for this change is to ensure that properties can more easily be located by emergency services and tourists and to conform with the rest of South Africa. Even although this change has been in the pipeline for more than 6 years, we understand the inconvenience which we will all have to bear, but it is for the greater good.

We wish you and your loved ones peace and happiness over the festive season.

Kind regards
Pat

Last weekend the final event of the year for the top golfers in the Free State province took place in Clarens.  The Heineken Clarens Open is a three way partnership between Heineken, The Clarens Golf Estate and the Free State Golf Union, and counts towards provincial colours and points.
This is the second year of the event, which was held over two days, last year’s having been played on one day only.  The Clarens Golf Estate General Manager, Francois Schoeman, envisages that it will become the biggest annual amateur golfing event in the Free State.  This was the only Free State Golf Union tournament that has been able to fill its field this year, and neither Eskom nor the weather were successful at undermining the success of the event.  To see the results etc Read more

Order your Christmas Trees

What a fun (and useful) way to support the CVC.

More about Christmas Trees

Tips for keeping your tree looking good:

The most important thing you can do is keep the tree watered.   Cool temperatures also help.   If you’re not bringing you tree in right away, let it sit in a bucket of water outdoors or in a cool place inside.

Try to keep it away from direct sunlight, winds, and sources of heat like heaters or appliances.

If your tree has been sitting for more than a day, make a fresh cut at the bottom at least 10cm above the original cut.   A smooth, clean cut will help the tree absorb water more readily. Place the freshly cut tree in lukewarm water,

Do not overload electric circuits.   If a fuse blows when you turn on your lights, it means that the line is overloaded or something is defective.

Lots of presents under the tree will of course, also help it to look good!
