Newsletter 8th August 2012

Weekend Weather Forecast

After the best snow fall I have ever experienced on Tuesday, we look forward to the possibility of more snow on Sunday, best extend your stay by a day…

Notes from the Editor

 Ornithological Update
Since last week’s publication the editor of this magazine has been inundated with requests from local farmers for more information with regards Woody’s prosthetic replacement. It is with everlasting regret that we must retract the previous article as an ill-conceived hoax, and extend a sincere apology to the Cluny Trust and Kat Barker for any inconvenience it may have caused. We would also like to report that Woody is doing very well and will continue to feature as an ongoing recipient of this magazine’s care and best wishes. In other news, as you may have picked up, Clarens had the best snow in 16 years on Tuesday, and this issue will feature a number of snow shots, showing Clarens off in its winter jacket, and profiling some of the more interesting Snowmen (and women) to show their faces this week. To do todayMark Webber from Fine and Country Estate Agents sent me this notification “Woman’s Day 2012. On Woman’s Day on 9 August 2012 we are officially opening our Counselling Centre at the Tshepong Centre in Kgubetswana.  As part of the celebrations we have identified and plan to honour a number of Women in Clarens who symbolise for us the spirit of generous service to the community. We would be delighted if you could attend the ceremony which commences at 14:30.  Refreshments will be served.” – Clarens News joins in paying respect to the women of Clarens who have been the driving force of all of its success as the premiere destination for tourism in SAReport Back Following our request for assistance, Clarens News is happy to report a great development for the Nurse’s Clinic “Paballo’s Nursing Care @ Clarens would like to thank Jean and Carol from Clarens Home Management Services for the fantastic donation of a Printer”. Let us know if we can help you help the community in any way, the wonderful readers of this newsletter are all delighted to be able to add to their favourite town.

Mosaic Photo Competition

As we enter the second week of this month’s photo competition, (with the first prize from Mosaic Pizza – dinner for 2) I feel a bit sorry for the earlier entrants, since the snow came I have been inundated with great snow shots. I personally reccommend the biltong and feta pizza, but it will be your dinner entirely. Good luck to all, and please don’t forget to voteClarens AutumnCigar smoking ApacheInsert Woman Driver Joke hereWhen the coffee wears offWhen the coffee wears offGuinea Fowl in the snowMount Horeb in its winter coatMount Horeb in its winter coatEnd of the RoadOdysseus in Clarens top

ART WORKSHOPS

Golden Artist Colors – Workshop Written by Valerie Daniel DATES: 24th – 28th September 2012 Nicky Thomson and Karen Dennyschene have recently returned from Slovenia where they underwent extensive career development training in Golden Artist Colors. Golden Artist Colors was founded in 1980 by Sam Golden who saw the potential of creating new acrylic materials to meet the growing faster and freer painting styles for artists. The beauty of these acrylics is that they do not dry as quickly as the normal run of the mill. The workshops are for advanced artists as well as beginners. I (a beginner) had the joy of attending a workshop inJohannesburg last week and was so impressed by the vast range of pure pigment colours and techniques. The paints are exceptionally smooth and buttery in consistency. We had such fun trying out the fluorescent and phosphorescent shades painted on to various pastes, gels and even fine glass beads. The happy participants took their paintings home and we all agreed that they would make delightful gifts. The general consensus was that we cannot wait for the next workshop. With the majority of people now concerned about the environment it was good to learn that the company has a deep concern for the environment and they take the impact of their products very seriously. They will be holding workshops in this technique here in Clarens, here are some pieces of their work.

Explore and create with the world’s most versatile medium through:
 Multiple techniques,
Collage,
Mixed media,
Paint applications and use of colour to enhance your artistic skills. ALL WELCOME FROM BEGINNER TO ADVANCED

Golf

Latest news from the Clarens Golf Club

Pink Ball Golf Challenge
Date: 15 August
Members: R50 Competition Fee
Guests: R150, competition fee included.
Format Explained
To play Pink Ball, use teams of three. Each team has a hideous, bright pink ball that rotates among players. Player 1 uses it on the first hole, player 2 on the second, and so on.
Keep the overall net score for the pink ball separately, and a prize is given to the team with the best pink ball score. If a team loses the pink ball, it’s out. If all teams lose their pink ball, the team with the highest number of holes played wins. IPS applies to each individual player. top
