The name Bibliophile comes from ancient Greek and means “a lover of books or a book-collector”.
Bibliophile is a small family bookshop housed in a charming wood and iron building alongside the historical Railway Bus Depot in Church Street. The Free State Colonial architectural style and a library ambience enhanced by an extensive collection of Folio Society volumes, serve as a gentle reminder of a bygone era. Little wonder it has been listed in the Lonely Planet Guide to SA as a highlight of the picturesque village of Clarens; one not to be missed.
Bibliophile is the exclusive stockist of All our Yesterdays – an anecdotal history of the Clarens Valley which was compiled, typeset, printed and bound on our premises.
We have an excellent and ever-changing selection of new, used and unusual books in a wide range of categories, many at exceptionally low prices. There is something of interest for everyone, from the serious collector of Africana to the weekend city escapee looking for a light romance novel.
The orderly and comprehensive layout of the store with clearly marked sections is a pleasure to browse. Our children’s books are spread throughout the store so that families can enjoy their browsing together – you can easily keep one eye on Junior while you browse the Military History section.
For those who prefer to listen, we have audio books on CD and cassette. The music section comprises a fine selection of jazz, classical and world music CDs, notably the Putumayo range of music from around the world.
We stock maps and road atlases, souvenir and travel guide books on Southern Africa as well as other titles of particular interest to overseas and domestic tourists.
We also offer visitors to Clarens a variety of games, puzzles and pastimes for those rainy afternoons when you curl up at the fireplace and basic range of stationery requirements, gift bags and greeting cards is available for your convenience.
An Artists’ Corner completes the picture: there are easels, canvases, paints, sketchpads and other art supplies and materials for the amateur artist inspired by the scenic splendour that surrounds us in Clarens. Limited edition prints of local artist Willis Missenden’s unique works are also available for purchase.
You are most welcome to browse our very special bookshop. Bibliophile is open daily from 9 am to 4.30 pm.
