Love Rosendal Festival 2015
Rosendal, one of the most picturesque villages in the eastern Free State, once again invites all to the Love Rosendal Festival 2015 from 13 to 15 February. This sixth celebration of the dorpie’s special people, creativity and delicious food – all wrapped in a breath-taking landscape – promises to be a fun-filled and memorable weekend. Locals and guests will rejoice in what this magical place is all about thanks to sensual cabaret, sporting events, entertainment, shopping opportunities, an extravagant parade and plenty to eat and drink! Not to mention the chance to delight in the enticing environment and simply do nothing for a while. A further bonus this year is that Radio Maluti will be broadcasting live from Rosa Restaurant’s stoep to the whole of the Eastern Free State. Come see the presenters in action, and listen to their interviews with locals and visitors alike.
The festival blasts off at 9pm on Friday the 13th with a sexy comedy in the Rosendal Theatre. ‘PrikkelPot’ sees Marié Beytall, “the Boere Zulu Madonna”, taking her audience across space and time as she becomes the African Creator Goddess. “Skattebollas…Die tannies gaan mal wees oor haar show…Dis raw…dis horny.” On sale will be the Afrikamasutra, the beautifully illustrated Afrikaans-language Kamasutra – a collector’s item!
On Saturday the 14th, Valentine’s Day, the village common in front of the restaurant is the place to be. From 9am to 1pm a boeremark-meets-carboot-sale (surrounding a festive marque tent) will have many shopping surprises on offer, including gorgeous, affordable costumes for the parade later on. Next door, fabulous tennis games will take place from 9am. Tennis elbow or not, come join in the action, or be served a drink at the bar watching other people serving.
For the kids, an exciting play area will be open from 10am to 4pm, where the popular costume making workshop will also take place.
From 12 to 4pm, the village opens its doors and hearts with ‘Kom doen die rondte van Vader Cloete’ - a chance to see behind the scenes. It’s a unique opportunity to amble around Rosendal, look into some of the residents’ rustic or avant-garde homes, explore the lush gardens and peek over the shoulders of artists at work in their studios. See how ‘Rosendarlings’ live and work, enjoy their hospitality, savour a delicious homemade snack or acquire something special to remind you of the village’s creative energy. Bring walking shoes (the town is the size of a stamp) or bicycles (can also be hired at Studio Ben). Visitors will receive a map, and all the stops will be marked with festive flags.
From 4pm, all will prepare for the legendary Valentine’s Parade from the common to the Waya Waya Tavern. The Mautse Primary School drum majorettes will strut their stuff, gumboot dancers will perform their impressive routines, the Caledon Park Trash Band will hit the high notes, and wire car races will kick up dust. The parade, starting at around 6pm, is spectacular – puppets, jugglers, costumed horse-riders and who knows what else… At the end of the parade participants are traditionally welcomed at the shebeen with ‘Loslappie’ blaring from the speakers! A shisa nyama (the quintessential township braai) and the cheapest Black Label quarts in the Free State also await to take care of the worst hunger and thirst.
If you missed out on the delicious Waya Waya food, a bonfire will be lit on the common at 8pm, where anyone can come for a bring and braai. For the culinary challenged and jol-seekers, the evening can be rounded off with the now-renowned party at Rosa Restaurant.
Sunday the 16th sees guests and locals recovering and relaxing at home or aiming for a Recovery Breakfast at Rosa. Attending a service in the historic, sandstone church at 9:30 or strolling around the town are other great ways to greet the new day.
