Weekend Weather Forecast
Vasbyt julle dit sal eers erg wees voor dat dit die son weer kan skyn – The silver lining is just on the other side of the clouds.
Notes from the Editor
Members of The Clarens Temperance Society (TCTS), who meet monthly to gargle rare single malts and wear funny hats, were in celebratory mood this week as news of the imminent opening of the village’s first Whisky distillery spread. The TCTS Chairperson, John O’Groats, confirmed that members had signed a bulk delivery agreement with the global consortium behind the venture, assuring them of 4 litre per hour delivery (6 on public holidays and Rabbie Burns’ birthday). This veritable gush of Glen Clarens will commence in the New Year apparently, but even this grand news has been overtaken by the announcement of a second proposed single malt, to be called 12-Day Old Clarens Sheep Dip. This peaty nectar will be especially popular with farmers in the valley, as they stand to score large agricultural tax concessions on the purchase of Sheep Dip by the case. The Loyal Association of Farmers’ Wives (LAFWs) expressed some reservations about this development, and were concerned that not all the Sheep Dip would find its way to the livestock. The distillers were busy digging up local peat and could not be contacted for comment.

News from the woodpecker nest under the Leaning Tower of MTN is that all is well, and that Grizelda (the one-winged Guinea Fowl) is assiduously sticking by her task as egg-minder while Woody and Doris Woodpecker take a break on the beaches of Cape Town. Postcards from Woody confirm that his titanium pecker is the centre of attention amongst the bird set of Clifton, much to the annoyance of Doris. (Readers will recall that Woody came to the attention of Clarens bird watchers when he attempted to bore a hole in the village’s newest tree, Cellicia Emteenus Africanus, and bent his beak irreparably on its metallic trunk; following an outpouring of public concern, Woody was given a shiny new pecker and found love in the wings of Doris, a shy but fertile lady woodpecker). More news of the African Pied Crow (identity withheld until next-of-kin are advised), which swallowed a cell phone and triggered a national emergency by burping ABBA ringtones across the country from 5000 metres (Clarens News 14 September): He flew north in a desperate attempt to escape the fury of more conventional (but jealous) songbirds, and was reported shot down by a ground-to-crow missile in the Middle East. Swedish music promoters are apparently offering a large reward for the remains of the not-so-smart phone and plan to erect a monument to the Unknown Crow in central Stockholm. Finally, mystery surrounds the whereabouts of a large clutch of Guinea Fowl eggs last seen on the edge of the Clarens Town Dam. Local sources suggest the complicity of a duck in the egg-jacking. More will be revealed in coming weeks as the mystery deepens. The Twitcher To find out more about Woody we suggest you run down to Bibliophile and have a look at the latest edition of Sasol Birds (vol 4)
Things to Do
The Clarens News would like to congratulate Valerie on the opening of BON APPETIT at its new location. Go to Clarens Meander on the Main Street (next to Protea Hotel) to enjoy one of the wide range of delicious teas (everything from Jasmine Bai Hoo to Lapsang Souzhaong), or stop over for Petit Dejeuner (breakfast in the true French tradition), or if it closer to lunch time choose from the menu of Assiettes. and follow up with something sweet from the menu of Les Desserts. Bon Appetit! The BLOU DONKI is hosting the artist Elzette Welgemoed from Ceres Western Cape- the official opening of the exibition is on Saturday @ 11h00 Sunday Lunch at the ProteaBOOK LUNCH AT THE GREEN GOOSE Lunch at The Green Goose is a simply must do for Clarens residents, as well as visitors staying in the area. The 93km drive may seem far, but given the stunning scenery, the good road, and the wonderful lunch waiting at the end, every kilometer is well worth the drive. From Clarens, take the R711 to Fouriesburg, then the R26 towards Ficksburg, but turn right onto the R70 (15kms before you get to Ficksburg). You’ll see the sign to the Green Goose on your left, where you turn onto the farm road, drive past the dairy, the fields of contented cows and other farm animals, and the cheese factory to a well sign-posted parking area. (GPS Co-ordinates: S28° 42’42′ E 27°55′ 54′.) The Green Goose is the home the famous Ficksburger cheese, that so many of the Clarens residents are addicted to, but this truly organic farm also produces many other fine cheeses. Lunch is served either under the trees overlooking the farm dam (see photo of the view) or beside a blazing fire – depending on the weather. (The group of Clarens residents who lunched there on Wednesday, started off outside, but then moved inside once the wind started blowing.) All the food – including the delicious home-baked bread – is lovingly prepared in Anneke’s farm kitchen, where, in true organic farming tradition, the ingredients are based on what’s available on the farm, and since this is a dairy farm, you can count on an excellent cheese platter. Special food, needs time to prepare, so you need to book before you go, and remember that this is not the usual run-of-the-mill restaurant, so you need to take your own wine. To book contact Anneke: Cell: 082 925 2770. He is the author and illustrator of six best-selling books and now lives in the Eastern Free State village of Clarens, where he works from the Sheepshed Gallery, on the Clarens Golf Estate. As one of the last war artists of the twenty-first century, he was author and illustrator of three books on war in southern Africa, 1965 to 1981. Two of these, Shadows of War (1978) and Faces of War (1980) captured the anguish of the bush war in Rhodesian (Zimbabwe), while the third, Images of War (1981) recorded the conflict in South West Africa (Namibia). Peter’s astoundingly detailed monochrome drawings are complemented by evocative poetry, in the great tradition of Sassoon, Brooke and Owen. These bestsellers and limited, leather-bound editions, now out of print, are regularly traded on Amazon and other international web and auction sites, together with his original drawings and prints. In 1985, Peter designed and illustrated The Illustrated Bosman, a celebration of South Africa’s most famous short-story writer’s wit and irony. Selling over 25,000 copies in five editions, the book included 85 highly stylised illustrations reflecting a turbulent century of adventure, seen through the eyes of Oom Schalk Lourens, Herman Charles Bosman’s wry narrator and reputedly the greatest liar in the bushveld. Trying to balance life in the slow-lane with a return to full-time writing and art in Clarens, Peter is currently working on a themed sequel to The Illustrated Bosman, entitled Marico Moments. In startling contrast, Peter also wrote and illustrated an off-the-wall children’s series, Fresh Out of Africa, set in The Land of Euphorbia. Best sellers in both English and Afrikaans, Hironymus, the hippopotamus who couldn’t swim (1988) and Englebert, the elephant who wouldn’t stay grey (1988) blend quirky humour with multi-media illustrations of quite unique vibrancy. Original illustrations and limited edition prints from these books and collections will be exhibited for the first time at the Sheepshed Gallery in 2012. The gallery also features a large collection of Peter’s oil on canvas wildlife and landscape painting, confirming his passion for Africa’s big sky country and the creatures who roam it. Peter lives in Clarens with partner, horticulturalist and author, Toni, and is returning to art, writing and publishing after a career in international consultancy. Peter and Toni live and work in a century-old renovated sheep shed (The Clarens Country House), which – not surprisingly – houses the Sheepshed Gallery. Go to lizardsleappress.com to see publications and pictures, and clarenscountryhouse.com to see the Sheepshed Gallery and guesthouse. Visit the Sheepshed Gallery, 213 Clarens Golf Estate/Email email@example.com/call 082 8510484 or 058 2561978. And the weekend after that the Bethlehem MTI Fees promises to be a great day out for locals and visitors to Clarens alikeAnd of course the Centenary is coming up next month

Cluny Animal Trust
To all supporters of the trust we remind you of the on-going jumble sale at Heather’s home, 23 Collett Street, every Monday and Friday, with clothing, household goods and other odds and ends for sale, in aid of Cluny Animal Trust. The goods range across the whole spectrum of quality, a number of sizes of women’s clothes, men’s and toddlers’ clothes. We still have some adults’ cycling kit left. And a rather disturbing letter from Heather: “While I have your attention, perhaps you know that I am leaving Clarens in about March next year. I have to find someone to take over what I do for the trust. Do you know anyone who would be prepared to do it? It is essentially very easy, just requiring persistence. I had never before done any charity work, fund-raising, PR, functions, Facebook, etc. (I am a speech therapist) and it wasn’t difficult to learn as I went along. There have to be people with spare time in and around Clarens who care about animals. Can you provide me with e-mail addresses or forward this, please? Regards, Heather” So please if you love animals and have any time on your hands, contact us now so we can continue her good work
