Weekend Weather

After a beautiful rainfall on Xmas day, we look set to enjoy a great weekend, right up to the New Year which looks to come in with a bang of thunder and lightning.

Notes from the Editor

All the best for the New Year

Compliments of the Season and Good Cheer to All As the silly season enters the next phase and the final Xmas leftovers vanish from the fridge, Clarens gets back to
work Ruby the Horse back at work and starts warming up for the New Year, the News takes this opportunity to wish all its readers a fantastic celebration of family and the future. I have personally been blessed with a full house of relatives, both little and large, and the joy of family has been a wonderfilled reality, give thanks. For those of you not yet exhausted by the feasting and partying, New Years Eve (Hogmanay as my Wee Gran called it) and Auld Lang Syne are just around the corner. As a child I remember never knowing the words, and the people around me at the time might have remembered, but at the time of singing it was enthusiasm rather than accuracy that really counted. In memory of that time, I have included the English translation of the Robbie Burns version of one of the oldest Scottish songs still sung in the world.
Auld Lang Syne Should old acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind ? Should old acquaintance be forgot, and old lang syne ? CHORUS: For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne, we’ll take a cup of kindness yet, for auld lang syne. And surely you’ll buy your pint cup ! and surely I’ll buy mine ! And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne. CHORUS We two have run about the slopes, and picked the daisies fine ; But we’ve wandered many a weary footsince auld lang syne. CHORUS We two have paddled in the streamfrom morning sun till dine But seas between us broad have roared since auld lang syne. CHORUS And there’s a hand my trustyfriend ! And give us a hand o’ thine ! And we’ll take a right good-will draught, for auld lang syne. CHORUS Of course, this is closer to the way it sounded at midnight around my family all those years ago http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2176ZIgNhY8 but for those of you who would like to hear the correct version with the words have a look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPnhaGWBnys Of course the next question is where are you going to be singing it. Van Smith might do a cover at Friends on the night, or you could try the Clarens Street Party between the Post House and Street Café. The road will be closed from the square to 278 on Main, and looks to be an amazing event, which people will remember for years to come. On the other side of the square at the Artichoke, Denzl and Hensie, two of Clarens’s most loved musical entertainers will be welcoming in the New Year at the same time Talking of Street Café, one of the new owners, Gen, asked me to mention the pool table they’ve just installed, and the prawn special they are running to introduce themselves to Clarens, pop in and enjoy a half kilo feast for only R72… see you there. Happy hour at Friends on Wednesday saw Slipstream blowing the crowd away with their friend Luke Skywalker on lead guitar, and to hear more of them go there Friday and Saturday nights this week. Or, if you are staying in and sharing Hogmanay with family and friends, you might want to pop into the Old Stone Bottle Store and take advantage of some their special offers

Bon Appetit PlattersAnd if you are staying in, you don’t have to slave over the hot stove all day (unless you want to). Why not order a delicious platter from Bon Appetit and enjoy your time with your loved ones to order phone Valerie on 079 873 1318
