CLARENS COMBINED ASSOCIATIONS COMMUNITY BRAAI CHALLENGE
29 SEPTEMBER 2013
Oh what a day it was!! 16 Teams entered, R15000,00 was raised for local charities and the Clarens community responded – with aplomb!! The SPF, Tsusanang Care Group, Cluny Animal Trust and Mr & Mrs William Soko will each receive R3750.
Natalie Meyer from Clarens Brewery together with the Clarens Tourism Forum (CTF), Clarens Rate Payers (CRA) Clarens Village Conservancy (CVC) and the Sector Policing Forum (SPF) combined in a tremendous effort to develop the concept to host this event. The SAPS together with Mr Peter Reed (Clarens Unit Manager) approved the hosting of the event on the Clarens Village Square.
Local businesses were approached for prize donations/sponsorships and again the response was overwhelming. See list
The afternoon was graced with the presence of some well-known ‘celebrities’, and, since they were there, they were put to good use:
- Johnny Depp aka Captain Jack Sparrow aka OLLIE ESPLIN – not only did he play a big part on the organizing and concept development side, his true talents surfaced as the MC/Compere on the day (see pictures on the Clarens Tourism Forum’s facebook page)
- Celebrity chefs: Chef Benni (Masterchef SA) aka VICTOR MOKOENA
- Gordon Ramsay aka LES THAKE
- The Giggling Gourmet aka SIGAL ZAHAVI
They too were put to work to judge the 3 categories i.e. best chop, best side dish and best pap+sous.
The spirit and atmosphere was fantastic with participating teams in dress-up costumes, tables were beautifully decorated and each team tried to outdo the next with presentation to the judges and a ‘bribe’ or 2 on offer! We were blown away by the jovial atmosphere, carefree banter, and the participation of old and young, black and white, business and resident alike.
Mr Victor Mokoena – Chairperson CTF wrote: What a resounding success colleagues! I am very proud of you all for your dedication and the spirit of oneness that continues to revitalize our little village! Well done to the team!
A huge thank you to Natalie Meyer (Clarens Brewery Team was the ‘ Team of the Day’) and Ollie Esplin for driving the event – and to all participants, sponsors/donors, supporters, Mr Peter Reed and Warrant Officer Steyn for making this event possible and contributing to its subsequent success!
Watch this space for the next one – SA Hot Air Ballooning has already pledged their participation!
