The Clarens Craft Beer Festival

The Clarens Craft Beer Festival

Come rain or shine – the Clarens Craft Beer Festival just seems to get better and better.  This well-organised event has become recognized as probably the best craft beer festival in South Africa. What, you may ask makes this festival so special.   Well, for a start, all the breweries represented at this festival have their brewers on-hand to talk about their craft.   And, probably equally important, access is limited to ticket holders so that everyone can enjoy the space without being swamped by hordes of people.   Then there’s also excellent food and good music all set in what must be one of the prettiest villages in the country.   What more could you ask for.

Have a look at the Clarens Craft Beer Festival facebook page:  loads of photographs and interesting news snippets.

Clarens is Art

Clarens is Art

Clarens is lucky enough to have young entrepreneurial artists continually creating a great vibe and excitement around the art-scene. Ism-Skism certainly added to the atmosphere over the beer fest weekend painting up a storm at the On The Square Centre.   On your next visit to Clarens be sure to pick up a map of the Art Route  you’re bound to find something to your taste at one of the many galleries in town.   You should also take a look at the Galleries page on the Clarens News website:

Ifu Lethu in Clarens – nurturing the creative spirit

Ifa Lethu

Ifu Lethu are still here in Clarens working with 60 young artists and crafters from Clarens, Phuthathitjaba, Bethlehem, and Fouriesburg.

Clarens News stopped in at the Martie Lotz hall to see how they were getting on, and found everyone hard at work.   Ifa Lethu will be in Clarens for another two weeks and we can’t wait to see the results of all the training, advice, and encouragement being given to the local artists and crafters.

Attention all Toyota owners

Your car is in demand!   A Toyota was stolen from outside a guesthouse in Clarens last weekend, and there was also an attempt to steal a second Toyota.   It seems that the Toyota thieves are back in Clarens.   If you have a Toyota please ensure that it is properly secured and in a safe place.   Guest house owners should also warn their guests, and do everything possible to ensure that these thieves don’t get away with another one.

Head ranger: Clarens Village Nature Reserve

Greetings to all our Village plant enthusiasts.  This week we’re focusing on a member of theAmaryllidceae (Bulbous lily) family.

Crinum bulbispermum (Orange-River Lily in English, Vleilelie in Afrikaans and Lelutla in Sesotho) is a perennial bulb of up to 900mm tall, usually observed at moderate altitudes of 1600 m A.S.L. in damp areas such as wetlands and streams. This plant occurs from the Western Cape – Limpopo. Crinum has its origins in the Latin Krinon – Lily, whilst bulbispermum means “bulblike seed” or “bulbous seed”.   Read more

Garth Lezard in Clarens

Garth Lezard

Garth Lezard is a Global Endurance Humanitarian Adventurer, who passed through Clarens a few days ago (March 3rd) on day two of his mammoth journey which will combine motorcycling and running/trekking through 24 countries and 6 continents.

My passion for global travel, endurance sports, photojournalism and Leonard Cheshire Disability Homes has lead to many adventures which I have documented over the years. My official capacity as a public figure was confirmed when I was voted in at the Annual General Meeting of the Queensburgh Cheshire Home, as ambassador for the charity in 2012.Prior to this my role was focused more on raising awareness and not on fundraising.I now use my Global Endurance Humanitarian Adventures to raise both awareness and funds for the charity.

We’ve been following him on twitter – and see that he has already made the Botswana border !   Garth told us that he intends to come back to Clarens at the end of his journey – which he thinks will be in about three year’s time.

Bon Voyage Garth.
