What’s happening right now in Clarens – Specials, Events and Attractions

4th Edition 02 August 2012When farm boys get bored

Weekend Weather Forecast

Our warmest weekend in ages, last Monday we were down to -10 at sunrise… a real feel low of 3 will be bliss

Notes from the Editor

 Ornithological Update
Clarens News (21 July 2012) reported that a very cute but demented woodpecker had bent its beak trying to bore a hole into the new MTN mast on the square.    Hundreds of letters and emails of concern followed, expressing concern about this concussed visitor to our treetops.    Clarens News can report that local veterinary hero, Cat Barker, has fitted a prosthetic beak to ‘Woody’ and that he is back trying to burrow his way into the  local network.    Stay connected for further news on this heart-warming tale, and send donations to the Cluny Animal Trust to cover the cost of Woody’s titanium pecker

August and the winds are chilling us to the bone, are we alarmed? No, and No again. We are very excited that the toyshop has a range of kites with which you can celebrate the adventures of the Xtreme paragliders, Ollie and Detmar – see pictureAnd talking of pictures, congratulations to Richard from Patcham Place who won the XLNTPhoto contest hands down, and not through group choreographed SMS campaigns either

Apologies to Carol who will now have to take over kitchen duty at Patcham Place while the resident chef (Richard) goes for a slap up brekky at Xlent Cafe. Maybe you should join him for coffee at Highland Roastery AND a beer at the Brewery.

Mosaic Photo Competition

As for this month’s photo competition, the MOSAIC photo comp, we have a new first prize from Mosaic Pizza, of dinner for 2. I personally reccommend the biltong and feta pizza, but it will be your dinner entirely. Good luck to all, and please don’t forget to voteClarens AutumnCigar smoking ApacheInsert Woman Driver Joke hereWhen the coffee wears offWhen the coffee wears off

Also exciting on the photo front is this pic from the Ash River White Water competition held recently in Parys, with this beautiful story from Jennie Dallas
WHITE WATER PADDLER

DANIEL BARNARD SCOOPS DROWNING DOG UP

FROM THE WILD WATER OF THE ASH RIVER DURING A COMPETITION EFFECTIVELY SAVING ITS LIFE

White Water Training based in Parys hosted a wild White Water Competition on the Ash river near Clarens on 28 July 2012 where slalom poles have been erected on the turbulent waters gushing from the tunnel of the Lesotho Highlands water project, for paddlers to train and test their skills while improving them, even as the men’s kayak teams fight for gold medals at the Olympics on London’s slalom course.
The Lassie type dog watching the paddlers seal sliding into the calm waters from a 2metre high bank to begin racing through the myriads of slides, drops, holes, huge wild white water waves and turbulent water for the next few hundred metres, doing specific exercises between slalom poles for points in the competition, and not knowing of the strong currents and the rapids around the corner, the friendly excited dog also slid down the bank.
Realising the strong current had him in its grip, the dog desperately scrabbled its doggy paddle to try to avoid being pulled down the first slide into the deep hole of turbulent water looking panickedly over its shoulder at the fearsome sight it was heading to, as Daniel Barnard, a guide for REAL adventure in Parys waiting to start his competition, shot into action racing towards the dog with no hope of catching him before the first rapid did.
As the dog surfaced from the first hole and wild water wave, Barnard used his extensive 15 years of skill to align himself next to the dog in the turbulent currents and scooped him up on to his lap while working his paddle to control the playboat.  There was no other course but forward into the next turbulent rapid and the dog watched with panicked eyes as they headed into the next waves where Barnard skillfully eddied out into the calmer water at the first opportunity and delivered Lassie to dry land where he was bundled into towels and a warm car parked in the sun to calm and warm him.  A half hour later a very happy smiley dog was wagging his tail very happily once again well aware of the close call with nature he had just been lucky enough to miss – had Barnard not been in the water and ready to go at the right time.
Barnard also successfully won the third place podium position in the overall MoustASH Fest competition after all the points for the wild water runs were tallied while Hugh Du Preez of White Water Training in Parys achieved the first place and Deon Breytenbach from Hoedspruit was second place winner.

Oddly enough, as though in keeping with a theme, the dog turns out to belong to none other than Xtreme Ollie himself, and I say oddly because there is no mention of him on the winners podium, (technically I would have to suggest that the dog, Fuzz, would actually have come third, making Barnard come forth…) There will be a prize for the best caption, possibly a tandem ride on the front of Brandon’s kayak…

Clarens Village Conservancy

The AGM is scheduled for August 15th at 5pm at the Methodist Hall. If you are not already a member you will still be welcome, and we all promise not to ask you why you haven’t joined yet. Meantime here is the link to the newest trail on the Conservancy which leads up to the iconic Titanic rock, Toni Walters had this to say: The newly opened Titanic Walk offers spectacular views over Clarens. Start this 2km walk in Naauwpoort street (just past the last house.) This is a moderately easy walk until you get to the final climb to the top of Titanic, which is a bit scarey and not recommended for inexperienced hikers. (The Conservancy are planning to install a rail along this section of the walk at a later stage.) The walk is however, still worth doing, even if you leave out the last section.  A new map showing all the conservancy walks is to be released soon, but in the meantime here is the path as shown on Google Earthclick on the map to go their webpage

ART WORKSHOPS

Golden Artist Colors – Workshop Written by Valerie Daniel Nicky Thomson and Karen Dennyschene have recently returned from Slovenia where they underwent extensive career development training in Golden Artist Colors. Golden Artist Colors was founded in 1980 by Sam Golden who saw the potential of creating new acrylic materials to meet the growing faster and freer painting styles for artists. The beauty of these acrylics is that they do not dry as quickly as the normal run of the mill. The workshops are for advanced artists as well as beginners. I (a beginner) had the joy of attending a workshop inJohannesburg last week and was so impressed by the vast range of pure pigment colours and techniques. The paints are exceptionally smooth and buttery in consistency. We had such fun trying out the fluorescent and phosphorescent shades painted on to various pastes, gels and even fine glass beads. The happy participants took their paintings home and we all agreed that they would make delightful gifts. The general consensus was that we cannot wait for the next workshop. With the majority of people now concerned about the environment it was good to learn that the company has a deep concern for the environment and they take the impact of their products very seriously. They will be holding workshops in this technique here in Clarens, here are some pieces of their work.

Explore and create with the world’s most versatile medium through:
 Multiple techniques,
Collage,
Mixed media,
Paint applications and use of colour to enhance your artistic skills. ALL WELCOME FROM BEGINNER TO ADVANCED

Pink Ball Golf Challenge
Date: 15 August

Keep the overall net score for the pink ball separately, and a prize is given to the team with the best pink ball score. If a team loses the pink ball, it’s out. If all teams lose their pink ball, the team with the highest number of holes played wins. IPS applies to each individual player. top
