Weekend Weather Forecast

It’s gonna be hot by day and cold by night, bring sunscreen and warm clothes, or visit the Blanket shop when you get here

Notes from the Editor

Clarens’ years of virtual wilderness are drawing rapidly to a close, with the MTN tower broadcasting 3G internet signal all over the village and the newest offering in that department – Internet SA – presenting its options on Tuesday evening at Cranford Hotel. With high speed broadband and various data plans they aim to provide the residents and visitors to Clarens with full connectivity and an entirely state of the art internet experience. Good luck to them, it’s about time somebody provided an alternative to the major providers, and especially beneficial to those of us based in virtual publishing. In the meantime Verne deserves a special mention for her supply of uncapped internet over the entire square, at a very reasonable rate. To find out more about local wifi, call her on 0835104906.

It is with bated breath, oscillating mood swings, bloodshot eyes and a high temperature that we look forward to the opening of the soon to be established medical center. Now you can have your kids treated for colds and flus as well as scraped knees and still be back in time for the second half of the rugby game, or maybe wait til Tuesday if it’s really serious

New medical centre opposite Protea Hotel corner van der Merwe street Docters – Dr Reed and Dr Stallenberg comes to Clarens Tuesdays and Thursdays call 058-3033748 for an appointment. Physiotherapist – Annemari Ackerman call 0844967382 she is available every day on appointment. Pharmacy – Gareth has just moved into the new center (which is lovely) call him on 058-2561852 for any medical advice, chronic and acute medication.

I had the pleasure of joining Rodney Wainwright and his team of dedicated troops in burning a firebreak on the Clarens Golf Course today, here are some of the images I had the pleasure of capturing – the perfect control they showed over the elements was almost marred by an idiot photographer standing in front of a wall of flame, singing Johnny Cash songs as the flames got higher and higher. PLEASE NOTE: From the beginning of August it is closed season in terms of open fires in the Eastern Free State. With high winds, warm temperatures and dry bush all around we ask all our readers to be especially careful this year

COOKING FOR CLUNY is coming up soon, on the 1st of September. Let’s make this an even better event than last year. You know how it goes: There’s no entry fee and you could win the floating trophy. You bring along everything you need to cook us a potjie of food, including your heating, and serving spoons and a starch to soak up the gravy (bread, rice, pap, etc) unless your potjie has starch included. All this and your time and expertise make up your donation to Cluny Animal Trust. We then sell tickets for the food by the portion to raise funds. Easy and fun!

Clarens Flora and Fauna

Clarens Flora and Fauna (CLARENS NEWS:  19th July, 2012) Clarens residents with a leaning to the botanic side of life will have noticed a new addition to the town’s tree population.   A fine specimen of the genus Cellicia Emteenus Africana has spread its luxuriant branches over the town’s 5-star public ablutions, rising high into our big sky and almost dwarfing its sandstone container, opposite the Bibliophile.   This tree is well-suited to the dry Eastern Free State, as its water needs are minimal.   Bird-fanciers will be delighted to see that this splendid addition to the town’s green belt has already attracted the attention of a rather persistent woodpecker, whose now somewhat truncated beak confirms that the Cellicia Emteenus Africana is indeed a seriously hard wood.

>As you may have noticed, it is no longer called the Clarens Connection, but the Clarens News, to go in closer conjunction with the Clarens News website. Apologies in advance for the inevitable confusion.
As the opening edition of the Clarens News, all previous adverts from the old Connection will be repeated, and all old contracts and agreements with advertisers will be honored (as much as possible). I have also taken the liberty of including a few adverts on behalf of people who I think would benefit from exposure, gratis. If your business would like to be listed or is already in this issue and wanting to be in forthcoming issues, please contact me to get rates and other offers on editor@clarensnews.com

Notes from the editor
You may notice that this issue is ridiculously long. One of the suggestions I am trying to implement is more of a Table of Contents and linking system, but to be honest I’m more of juggler than an internet designer. After a couple of days banging my head against strange codes and anchor point instructions that just don’t work, I have decided to let it be a problem for this issue, and (hopefully) it will be rectified in time for the next edition.
With the Clarens Centenary coming into view late in October, now is the time to make our town shine. If you want to get involved in any way, please let us know your ideas or suggestions and we will do our best to put you in contact with others who can help make your vision a reality.

Congratulations are in order for The Artichoke Restaurant which opened this week. Claudia and Bruce have done really well in creating a soothing atmosphere with one of the best views in Clarens dining. Those of you who remember the old Street Cafe will be pleasantly surprised at the style and finesse they’ve brought to the old building, but thrilled that they are still the same hospitable folk who have turned `kuiering’ into an art form. And the bath tub has followed them, so go take a picture and have a bite to eat, a glass of wine and a delightful time at the newest restaurant in Clarens, right next door to the Lake Clarens Hotel as you drive into the town.

Adventure of the week
I took Monday off (good thing to do in Clarens after a busy weekend) and went to Meiringskloof Nature Reserve in Fouriesburg. A beautiful walk along a stream coming down from a mountain dam, through huge overhanging caves and bushman sacred sites. Can’t wait for summer to go and shower under natural waterfalls and swim in the dam. Highly
recommended for people staying longer than a few days in the area.
